Hello Køge, we are back!

Here we are! Again in Køge and this time we will live here for 4 weeks, yes!

Of course in our little house, re-built in the square in front of KØS Museum, in occasion of the current exhibition “In your heart – In your city”.

We continue the Discuvry project, mixing our daily life with art works.

Work in progress: a terrace-urban-garden beside our house with some japanese vegetable and flowers, we built the pots with reclaimed wood found in the streets of Køge

We are here every day until the 19th June and we will make two house-party on the 9th and 18th June. So if you are in Denmark by chance, come to visit us!

You will find more news about the events in the Museum’s Facebook page.

FreeCuvry…it was damn real…

today

As many of you have already known, FreeCuvry is evicted.

The eviction process started on Thursday 18th September, when in the night (at about 21.00) a big fire burned some houses just in front of our home.

The cause of the fire are still unclear, in the beginning we thought it was made by some people from the camp, because of some inside fighting, but in the end Cuvry’s people were sure it was not realize from somebody who lived in the camp.

There were many theories, from the neo-nazi to an organized tactics to evict Cuvry. Just one things is sure: the police was too fast and ready to kick everybody out of the camp, with the excuse of investigating for the fire, and they didn’t let anybody to get in anymore.

The weekend after the fire we could go inside just shortly to take our stuff from the houses.

On Monday 22nd September the bulldozers started to destroy all the houses of FreeCuvry.

Nobody of us thought that destroying FreeCuvy would have be so fast, so easy…too easy.

We would have realized a project this month in Cuvry, with the theater Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin.

Our plan was to start exactly from the weekend after the fire to organize events and art performance in Cuvry. But we couldn’t even start.

Thanks to this project with HAU and to the help of our friend and art curator Lutz Henke, we managed to have the authorization to save our house as art piece. We had two days of time to enter in the destroyed Cuvry, between the working bulldozers, cut our house in pieces and bring it away.

Thanks a lot to Raul Walch, Masaru Iwai, Rikiya Yamakawa, Nill, David and the other friends who worked with us in these two crazy day to save our house!

We will take part in the event Treffpunkte organized by HAU with the FUTURE LIVING lab

from the 2nd October to the 12th October we will do some art actions in some public space in the city (please check the website of the theater to know where we will be day by day);

from the 13th October until the 26th October, in front of the HAU2 avenue we will create an installation with the house and show all our documentation and our work realized since when we arrived in FreeCuvry – almost two years ago – till today, included the days of the eviction.

FreeCuvry was a unique reality in Berlin, a mirror on the society that surround us.

It was amazing, beatiful, crazy, cruel.

It was damn real.

Now it is just history, just memory.

Discuvry project: one and half year later

Discuvry is a project between art, architecture and social experimental research. It goes over building a simple object, but include living the work and making daily actions.

The idea of realize an illegal house in the empty field of Cuvrystrasse came at first to Yuki, he wanted to realize a big project and I followed him, because it was very interesting for me seeing from inside if a anarchic multicultural village works, how it develops spontaneously in the heart of a european capital, how this architecture without architects lives and grows.

Yuki realized a stop-motion video of the building process and the first exhibition of Discuvry was the collective “Open Monement”, at the Kunstraum Bethanien in Kreuzberg. In the summer 2013 Yuki showed the project at the MOCA, Hiroshima City Musuem of Contemporary Art, for the exhibition “Site: Places of Memories, Space with Potential”.

We have continued the project untill now, documenting it day by day, doing pictures and observing how the life is going on FreeCuvry.

I never imagined personally this project would have lasted so long. Today is already one year and four months.

We saw lot of changes to happen on the field, people arriving and going away. We listened lot of stories, funny stories, cruel stories, surreal stories and too real stories.

We learned a lot.

We learned to give the right importance to the things, to appreciate the simplicity. We learned that another way to live is possibly, or better, other 100 ways to live are possible.

Of course we have our vision about life. We work hard everyday and we try to don’t ask, if we can do it by ourselves. Yuki had two other big project, one in Göttingen and one in Berlin, for Hebbel am Ufer, and one exhibition at REH-transformer gallery, in Berlin. I worked in a architect office in Berlin, collaborating with ISSS-Research&Architecture.

Not all the people who live in FreeCuvry have our same life-style, some of them work, some are artists, some musicians, some collect bottles, some ask for money in the street, some simply don’t do anything.

I don’t agree with many of the life-styles in FreeCuvry, but I am nobody to impose my life vision to anybody except to myself.

And you? Are you so sure you can do it?

We don’t stop!

cuvrynale

We continue every day to work at the camp, cleaning and preparing the earth and the spirits to the CUVRYNALE.

After cleaning the entrance and the library (some blue bags are still there, we carry them outside little by little, unless some artists have a good idea about a big installation with blue garbage bags…), we are now cleaning the space in front the “gipsies’ way”. The idea today was to create a football field.

It was very nice to have been helped by the gipsy children today, although my rake is gone…but ok, we will not stop for such a little thing.

Maybe there is still hope to achieve a balance in this multicultural anarchic village.

The calling for everyone wants to participate to the CUVRYNALE is always open.

We are waiting for people of good will and creativity!

Today we are still here

the refugees on the roof of the school

And for today FreeCuvry is save from an eviction.

Without police in the camp we were free to clean and order, starting from the library. After some hours of work we managed to put all the garbage in blue bags that we will kindly give to the city like a present, if the administration will be so kind to come and take them every morning in the corner of the street.

While we were cleaning we found all kind of stuff, even a vacuum cleaner! And don’t tell me that it was of FreeCuvry’s people! Nobody will trust you, since in Cuvry nobody knows what to do with a vacuum, unless someone has the power to generate electricity…

Today also a crew from the rbb TV came in FreeCuvry to make a reportage, that we didn’t watch because we don’t have TV (for the same reason we don’t have a vacuum). I just hope they didn’t make another bad report because we really don’t need it anymore.

Meanwhile the eviction of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Schule in Kreuzberg. We were there half an hour before and there was the demonstration with music and lot of people were screaming “Freedom!” and supporting the refugees.
Do not give up!

I hope when it will arrive this day for FreeCuvry the people from outside will support us too, but I hope it is a very far day.

At least it will be not tomorrow.

Discuvry House Market

market-anim

Eviction or not eviction: that is the question.

While nobody knows this so feared date, we can not stay without doing anything. Rather we are more stimulated to do something creative and good for FreeCuvry.

Let’s start doing the Discuvry House Market!

We will sell all the chairs, tables, pots for plants and whatever we realized in this time working here in FreeCuvry and you could also enjoy a tea or coffee at our terrace surrounded by green.

As you know (or you imagine) we don’t have electricity here, so everything we create here is created using just hand-saw, hammer and nails. A little bit old style? But this is what makes our work so special.

If you don’t believe me, come here and see with your own eyes!

Come to visit in our house every Saturday of July from 11.00 to 18.00.

Opening day Saturday 28.07.2014!

Eviction noise

planee

It seems like an eviction in FreeCuvry will arrive soon.

Already some weeks ago in the camp there were some voices about a probably eviction in this month of June, but now these voices become every day real. All the inhabitants of Cuvry have seen in the last days the police’s controls increase, every day lot of helicopters fly over the camp, yesterday one of them did 5 times a circle, most probably to take good pictures of the all field to can have the exactly number of the houses and an idea of the quantity of the people who live here.
I can already tell it to you .

The houses in FreeCuvry are 50 or more, about 20 of them are gipsies’ house. If you think that in every house there are at least 2 people, but in a gipsies’ one there is a family of 4 or 5 people, this means that in FreeCuvry live between 100 and 150 or more people.

So Berlin, are you ready to kick in the street more than 150 people like it were nothing?

I also understand the gipsies are a recent problem here in Germany. Since the Romania and Bulgaria have entered in the EU, the borders opened and the gipsies arrived here. They have lived in Italy since long time, because the less controls to enter in my own country or for the more tolerance for immigrants. A Roma camp is also near my family house in Catania. Italian people know them maybe better, at least they see gipsies everyday in the italian cities so they know their way to live. But for german people this can be a new wrong life-style. Even Yuki was totally surprise when he discovered the first time on which way the gipsies live, cause in Japan gipsies have not yet arrived.

But it is not so easy, it is not with a eviction that Berlin will solve the gipsies problem. They live in this way since centuries or thousands years, they don’t really care if their houses would be destroyed, them will find another place and build another 100 time new houses.

But I can also say that FreeCuvry is the only place where I saw gipsies from Romania living together with gipsies from Bulgaria and Spain, and with Poles, Italians, Germans, Australians, Dutch, South Americans, Lithuanians, Hungarians, Japaneses and all the people from around the world who live in FreeCuvry.

I don’t know if this mix of culture will arrive to a balance for the creation of a organized village, but some months or even one year are not enough to know it.

The owner of the field, Artur Süsskind, has already ordered the evacuation to the police. They are preparing it in these day.

So it’s written in a article of Neues Deutschland.

But yesterday also a journalist of the Morgen Post came in Cuvry to interview us and make some pictures of our project. Her name is Uta Keseling.
She told us she is going to write an article on the weekend newspaper about all the empty areas in Berlin, talking about the positive and negative sides. I hope our project will be in the positive ones.
The article will be publish on this sunday.

We know in FreeCuvry there are huge money interests, I’m an architect and Yuki is an artist, we are not activists neither politics. In this kind of world and society we can not win against so big power. We can just continue to work every day, do what we can do, create something beautiful around us, hope to give and take good and positive energies from all the people and from all the spaces we live.

And maybe one day something will change.

So if you also think like us, please visit us in these days that could be the last, and help us to keep the good that we still see here.

Cuvry Spring Frenzy

cuvry spring-2

And finally it’s spring also in Cuvry!

All around our house everything is already green, we wake up with the voices of the birds and the big wild plants grow amazingly fast and hide us from the view of the people who pass through the camp in the weekend, going to sit in front of the Spree and spend a nice sunny afternoon.

cuvry spring-23

This is the Cuvry spring frenzy: everybody has started to order and clean the camp and the garden-fever is really contagious all around FreeCuvry. Behind our house there were the rests of the garden cared by the italian guys last year, and now one girl cares about it every days with a lot of love, planting different vegetables. She gave us some carrots sprouts too!

cuvry spring-19cuvry spring-20

Yuki is caring about the garden around the house, planting some carrots, cucumbers, radishes and sunflowers in front of the kitchen and other flowers near the entrance. We really hope our seeds will grow, but it’s not easy, especially because in Cuvry all the dogs are free to jump into your flowerbed and destroy everything…but this is Cuvry 🙂

I love this energy.
I love the spring in Cuvry!

cuvry spring

kitchen

I’m building the kitchen for my house since i have come back in Berlin (extension at the North front ). From september Berlin is getting cold day by day, but I have to wash kitchen stuff outside. Always i put bucket of water for wash outside, one day in the morning that water was ice, of course I was not in the mood to wash the dishes and freeze my hands! I really like cooking, it’s one of my favourite activity and i think cooking is very important, of course for saving money but mainly because if i don’t cook at my home, i don’t feel like i’m living here…that’s why i’m building the kitchen and now it’s almost finished! Finally I can wash and cook inside. aaaahhh! But it took time because my partner couldn’t work so much with me.
We spent about 1 month to build the house but just the kitchen took almost 2 month… anyway alone everything is hard in FreeCuvry!
